What is Expo?
Being a global destination for millions of people, this place is to share ideas, show innovation, foster collaboration and celebrate human ingenuity.
They are organized every five years and last for six months.
The very first World Exhibition was held in 1851 at the Crystal Palace of London and was known as the Great Exhibition of the Works of the Industry of all Nations. It showed around 100,00 objects which show the creations of the industrial revolution.
Some of the surprising inventions which were brought to the world for the first time in an exhibition include the telegraph in London in 1851, the typewriter in Philadelphia in 1876, the diesel engine in Paris in 1900, the color television in New York in 1964 , the IMAX movie in Osaka in 1970, and wireless streetcars in Yeosu in 2012.
The most current expo, which began in 2015, was held in Milan, Italy, with the theme “Feeding the planet, Energy for life”.
The creations comprise solar trees and lifts that save energy, something that would be useful in the UAE with all high-rise buildings.
The Reason Behind Dubai’s win
Words of victory in 2013 caused scenes of jubilation both in Paris at the general assembly of the International Exhibition Office (BIE), the international organization responsible for supervising, regulating and selecting the candidate for the world fair, and in the UAE, where the residents waited for the result of the vote of the 164 members of the nation with the right to vote.
Dubai won by a strong majority of 116 votes, leaving Yekaterinburg, Russia, with only 47.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, vice president and governor of Dubai said that he is proud of his teams which won this victory for Dubai with two years of hard work, dedication, and commitment.
Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State and managing director of the bidding committee of the World Expo 2020 in Dubai, had previously made an emotional speech before the BIE committee.
He got resounding applause for his 20-minute presentation containing videos about Dubai’s diversity, infrastructure, and stability.
When the victory was announced, fireworks filled the sky in Dubai when they exploded outside the Burj Khalifa in front of thousands of smiling faces below.
Sheikh Mohammed announced a holiday later for all educational institutions in the UAE.
After two years of hardship and planning, Dubai’s offer for organizing Expo 2020 had reached 850 million people with the help of social networks, without any of the other contenders coming close, according to Fisheye Analytics.
